The sanctuary rescues injured seabirds, land birds, and birds of prey, which are nursed back to health and then released into the wild. In the late Nineties, a building surge occurred due to land values dramatically increasing, especially on the water. Many of the original, single story cottages and motels have been torn down and replaced by multi-story beachfront condominiums with spectacular views. With its spacious, golden beaches, Indian Shores' residences consist largely of low-rise to mid-rise condominiums on the Gulf and two- to three-story townhomes on the Intracoastal. Peppered with well-established, family run stores, mouth-watering restaurants and motels, this delightful city's permanent population is approximately 1,500 people.
